Cameras for everyone: Point & Shoot Cameras
Smartphone Cameras have been getting better over the years and have fast replaced the traditional Point and Shoot cameras. While they may not hold the candle to the best DSLRs and Mirrorless Cameras, Smartphone Cameras often tend to be good alternatives to compact Point and Shoot Cameras.
This is not to say that Point and Shoot Cameras don’t have their advantages but very often it comes down to personal preference.
The two areas where Point and Shoot Cameras score over Smartphone Cameras are storage and image information. Because they don’t double up as computers with hundreds of apps and other data, Point and Shoot Cameras have great storage capabilities that are used for one thing and one thing only: store image and video files. So, you don’t have to pay for a cloud service to store the thousands of video clips you’ve shot on your recent trip or keep deleting files to make space for more.
Again, since Point and Shoot Cameras have just one function – shoot pictures and videos – they tend to store image files in their full sizes. Their sensors tend to be larger and are hence able to take in more data per file. This makes the image quality of a picture or video shot on a Point and Shoot Camera better than the one taken on a Smartphone Camera.
Why is it called a Point & Shoot Camera?
Point and Shoot Cameras are exactly what their name suggests - they let you point at a subject and shoot a photo or video. Also called compact Cameras, these machines have a fixed lens, auto-focus, and built-in flash settings. These Cameras are considered the perfect travel Cameras due to their pocketable size and long zoom range.
What are Point and Shoot Cameras good for?
Point and Shoot Cameras are convenient to document everyday moments without the hassle of tuning the camera dial to the right setting and worrying about aperture and shutter speed.
Should I choose a Point and Shoot Camera or an Instant Camera?
A good Point and Shoot Camera can shoot great photos and videos and store great many of them in its memory. However, printing one out can be a task. An Instant Camera on the other hand is just as compact but a lot cooler because it simply prints out the image instantly. But while you get your photo immediately, you also lose out on the opportunity to edit the image. And an Instant Camera doesn’t shoot videos.
While both have their pros and cons, which Camera to buy – Point and Shoot or Instant Camera – depends on how you see yourself using the device. If it’s for the occasional cool shots you can print out for posterity or to decorate your room, Instant Camera is the way forward. If it’s convenience and (comparatively) higher quality images and videos is what you’re looking for, Point and Shoot Camera is the one for you.
