Watching too much TV (or any form of screen time) is bad enough as an adult, but can be especially detrimental to the development of children. Issues can arise in multiple areas, including lack of physical activity, decreased attention spans, and even sleep problems, all of which can have an impact on a child’s growth and development.
Parents need to be aware that such issues can occur and should take steps to limit TV time accordingly.
What are the advantages of television for children
1. Educational content: Many children’s shows are designed as educational programs. These include Teletubbies, Sesame Street, and more. Children learn from a format that is designed to be engaging and can develop skills faster in this manner.
2. Inspiration: TV can also be a great source of inspiration and awe for a growing child. Be it the launch of SpaceX’s new rocket or an interview with a beloved sportsman, there are plenty of sources of motivation to be found.
3. Cultural awareness: An often overlooked benefit of certain TV programmes like travel and food shows is the cultural awareness they inculcate in kids. Such shows are an opportunity to embrace new cultures and learn about other ways of living.
4. Physical activity: Counter-intuitively, TV in the right setting can help encourage physical activity. Perhaps the Olympics spurs interest in a new sport, a cricketer talking about a new bowling technique encourages experimentation on the field, and more.
5. Stress relief: This is just as important a factor as everything else. Too much TV has a demonstrably detrimental effect on development, but in moderation, a light-hearted entertainment program and the like can encourage children to unwind and relax after a busy day.
What are the disadvantages of television for children
1. Shorter attention spans: TV shows, especially children’s shows, are designed to be engaging. However, the format in which they are made engaging — fast pacing, jump cuts, loud noises, and more — can directly impact the attention span of your children during critical growth stages.
2. Compounding behavioural and social issues: The above issue, coupled with low content quality and less time spent in social settings can impact your child’s social skills. This can also result in behavioural issues, a lack of empathy, impatience, and more.
3. Impacted creativity: Given that consuming TV is a passive experience, excess TV can severely impact creativity in children.

4. Complications from a sedentary lifestyle: If your child is spending too much time in front of the screen, they’re spending a lot less time outside engaging in physical activity. This can result in a number of complications including obesity, poor long-term health, and limited growth.
5. Poor food habits: Many TV shows and ads also tend to encourage poor eating habits and junk foods, contributing to obesity and health issues later in life.
As a parent, it’s important that you monitor your child’s activities. It’s important to encourage social interactions and to participate during playtime to ensure that your kid is actively engaged and learning new things. Excess TV, as with all things in excess, can lead to lasting physical and mental health issues that will be difficult to treat later.
