ChatGPT is getting human-like memory; will soon remember you and things you like

ChatGPT has been taking the world by storm ever since its inception. In fact, several smartphone makers today, like Nothing, have begun giving users the option to swap their virtual assistant with ChatGPT. But soon, it will be able to lend a lot more than its primary abilities and deliver a more personalised experience for you.

OpenAI, in a blog post, mentioned how ChatGPT will be able to remember something once a user opts for it. This quality is likely to make it more human and make future conversations helpful.

The blog stated how the limited test (available for both premium and free users) will be able to pick up keywords from your conversations and remind you if and when required.

How will ChatGPT remember?

While the idea of an AI chatbot remembering what you say may sound a tad dystopian, to say the least, there’s more to it than what it sounds like. OpenAI mentions how users will have the option of opting out of ‘memories’ by choosing the Temporary Chat Mode.

This will ensure ChatGPT only remembers details for the moment and forgets the moment you exit the chat. Additionally, you will also be able to ask ChatGPT to remove memories like a user deletes their browing history.

What can ChatGPT remember?

ChatGPT will be able to remember details from your conversations. For instance, if you’ve mentioned in a conversation about how you prefer tea over coffee, ChatGPT will remember this to give you tailored results. A key benefit would include not having to start a new chat every time.

It, in turn, becomes a useful memory for the next time you want your assistant to order your favourite tea for you at 10:00 AM. Alternatively, if you want ChatGPT to remember something about someone, say your friend, the next time, it can simply help you out with results for them when asked.

Apart from being able to control what it can remember, you also have the option of telling ChatGPT to forget. You can even navigate to Settings > Personalisation > Manage Memory to clear or delete specific memories. However, it is crucial to note that deleting a chat may not erase its memory, and you might have to select it individually for ChatGPT to forget something.

While this may seem like something out of a sci-fi movie, to begin with, there’s no denying that it brings us a step closer to the future.
