Day-to-day messaging has slowly moved to instant messaging platforms such as WhatsApp. However, plenty of institutions rely on RCS (Rich Communications Services) to communicate with users. From bank OTPs to verification codes, you might have to sieve through a flurry of messages that may or may not be relevant to you.
If you’re an Android smartphone user, you might even be dreading opening your Google Messages app, knowing the treasure trove of spam messages that awaits you. But it seems as though you might not have to worry soon, as the brand seems to be introducing a solution to combat this. Here’s everything you need to know:
Google Messages will now have an unsubscribe button
Your Google Messages inbox is most likely flooded with promotional messages, spam and all sorts of clutter. But as it turns out, a recent development noted by 9to5Google, reveals that there may soon be a way to manage this better.
According to the publication, Google plans to introduce an unsubscribe button that is aimed at reducing business, promotional and advertising content sent via spam. It also states that the button will lead the user to select a reason for unsubscribing to the message. The reasons will reportedly list: spam, didn’t sign up, no longer needed and too many messages, similar to what is observed on WhatsApp Messenger.

It further states that on selecting any of these options, Google Messages will send a ‘STOP’ message to the sender in the background. This action typically restricts the brand or spammer from sending you any more messages.
When will this feature come to Google Messages?
For now, the unsubscribe button will be coming to India, along with other select countries, such as the US, Brazil, France, Germany, Mexico, Spain, as well as the UK. According to the brand, it is primarily rolling out to regions where RCS messages are the preferred form of communication.
Google has been consistently working towards curbing spam calls as well as messages for a while now. Despite its efforts, spam seems to be a continued issue that plagues just about every user. However, with another step in the right direction, we might just be able to decrease the distraction and the annoyance that comes along with unwanted communication.
