The new Apple AirTag 2 makes finding lost items faster and easier

More range, less guesswork

The new Apple AirTag 2 makes finding lost items faster and easier

Apple has refreshed its AirTag, and while the familiar button-sized design remains unchanged, the internals have had quite a meaningful upgrade. The new AirTag 2 focuses on one thing above all else: making it easier and faster to find your stuff, whether it’s lost down the back of a sofa or circling an airport carousel somewhere far from home.

At the heart of the update is Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, the same silicon found in the iPhone 17 lineup and the latest Apple Watch models. The result is Precision Finding that now works from up to 50 per cent farther away, guiding users with the familiar mix of on-screen directions, haptics, and sound.

Tracking gets sharper and louder

Range is not the only improvement. Apple has paired the new UWB chip with an upgraded Bluetooth radio to extend connectivity even further, which should help in those in-between moments before Precision Finding kicks in. The internal speaker is also 50 per cent louder, making it easier to hear an AirTag buried inside a backpack or wedged under furniture.

Apple is also leaning harder into its ecosystem. Precision Finding now works on Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 or newer, letting users track items straight from their wrist without pulling out their phone. It is a small quality-of-life change, but one that fits neatly into Apple’s push to make the Watch feel more independent.

On the services side, Apple is expanding Share Item Location. AirTag owners can now securely share an item’s location with trusted third parties, including airline staff. More than 50 airlines are already onboard, and Apple points to early SITA data showing a 26 per cent drop in baggage delays and a 90 per cent reduction in unrecoverable luggage where the system is in use.

Privacy safeguards remain unchanged. Location data stays end-to-end encrypted, Bluetooth identifiers rotate frequently, and Apple reiterates that it cannot see where items are. Cross-platform alerts are still in place to prevent unwanted tracking.

Apple AirTag 2 price and availability

The new AirTag uses 85 per cent recycled plastic and 100 per cent recycled rare earth elements in its magnets, while staying compatible with existing AirTag accessories. Pricing remains the same as before: $29 for a single AirTag or $99 for a four-pack. In India, that translates to Rs 3,790 for one and Rs 12,900 for a four-pack.

The updated AirTag is available now via Apple’s website and the Apple Store app. What do you think of the AirTag 2? Is it on your wishlist? Drop a comment with your thoughts.
