Sony PS5 Pro rumour roundup: What we know about Sony’s upcoming Pro gaming console so far

It’s been close to four years since the original PlayStation 5 was launched, and yet, it doesn’t feel like it was so long ago. That’s because most people could get their hands on the PS4 successor only after the post-pandemic frenzy.

However, Sony has already released another version of the wildly popular console with largely similar specs except the storage, and a slimmer design. And its name, rather predictably, is the PS5 Slim

Now though, several reports confirm that Sony is working on a more powerful successor to the original PS5 and PS5 Slim, reportedly called the PS5 Pro. Rumour has it that the console, internally, is being called “Project Trinity,” keeping in line with the previous Matrix-themed names Sony had for the PS4 Pro and the PlayStation VR – Neo and Morpheus respectively.

And if you’re contemplating whether to wait for the PS5 Pro or go ahead and pick up that PS5, we may be able to help. Here’s a roundup of all the leaks and rumours around the Sony PS5 Pro.

PS5 Pro: Improved GPU and high-frequency CPU mode

Rumour has it that the PS5 Pro will get a more powerful GPU with improved ray tracing, and the same CPU, albeit with a “Faster” mode. GPU rendering, reports suggest, will be about 45 per cent faster than the standard PS5. The improved ray tracing is expected to enable the PS5 Pro to run all games at 60fps and operate at speeds up to three times higher, which itself is no slouch.

Previous rumours also suggested that the console is expected to sport the same eight-core AMD Ryzen Zen 2 processor. And that a new mode may allow overclocking up to 3.85GHz, a 10 per cent jump from the original PS5’s 3.5GHz. Sony plans to provide developers (and eventually, users) to choose between this high CPU frequency mode and a standard mode with clock speeds of 3.5GHz.

Latest reports from Insider Gaming though, suggest that the PS5 Pro will also be capable of operating at speeds of up to 33.5 Teraflops. A Teraflop is a unit of measure used to calculate the speed of a computer, equal to one trillion floating-point operations per second.

PS5 Pro: System memory

System memory on the PS5 Pro is expected to be 13.7GB, as compared to 12.5GB on the standard PS5. Memory bandwidth, on the other hand, is expected to be around 576GB per second, as compared to 448GB per second on the standard PS5.

Additionally, the console is expected to ditch the 825GB SSD from the original PS5, in favour of a 1TB SSD with higher native storage capacity.

PS5 Pro: PSSR Upscaling

The PS5 Pro is expected to get Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling, or PSSR technology. This, coupled with an advanced machine-learning model on-board, will upscale 1080p games to 4K resolution. This will help provide a more immersive experience across the Sony PS5 and PS5 Pro’s game library

PS5 Pro: Design

Now, not much is known about the design of the PS5 Pro, except that it may be slightly bigger compared to the original PS5. However, the design for the same isn’t expected to be a huge departure from the former, given that the PS5 Pro is an evolution and not an entirely new offering on its own.

However, it will reportedly get a detachable disc drive. This should spare you from the dilemma of whether to buy a disc or the digital version, if at all it gets two versions.

PS5 Pro: Tentative launch date

Reports suggest that the Sony PS5 Pro will launch sometime in the year-end holiday season of 2024. later this year. This could be true, bearing in mind how Sony had launched the PS4 Pro about three years after the launch of the original PS4, at around the same time.

Bear in mind though, this also means that the PS5 Pro could make it to the shelves in India only well into 2025, considering how it came nearly half a year later to the country after its launch in North American and Australian markets in 2020 as well.
