Apple is expected to enter the foldable smartphone segment this year by announcing a unique book-style foldable phone in September. Reports have also revealed that the Cupertino tech giant is working on a foldable flip phone. In a recent Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, Mark Gurman shared some early details about this device.
Apple’s flip-style foldable iPhone in works
According to Gurman, Apple is considering launching another foldable phone with a square, clamshell-style design. This would be similar to flip-style devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Motorola Razr 50.
Gurman did not share any information about the device’s launch timeframe, but claimed that its release is not yet confirmed. For now, Apple is expected to focus on observing the success of its first foldable iPhone, gauging market demand, and assessing whether customers would be interested in additional shapes and form factors beyond traditional iPhones.
When is it expected to launch?
It was reported back in October 2025 that the unofficially dubbed iPhone Flip could debut in 2028. However, there is currently no fresh information regarding its launch timeline or specifications. It is likely that the rumour mill will reveal more details a few weeks after the iPhone Fold debuts in the market later this year.
The iPhone Fold is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max this year. At present, there is no clarity on whether Apple plans to introduce a successor to the iPhone Air this year. As for the standard iPhone 18, it is expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18e in Q1 2027.
Looking further ahead, Apple is expected to launch its 20th anniversary iPhones in 2027. While the official naming remains unclear, reports suggest that the company may skip the iPhone 19 branding altogether.
