ChatGPT is an AI-powered chat platform where users can converse in a human-like manner with a large language model for text generation and information. Now, OpenAI, the company behind it, is taking the conversation to the next level by bringing group chat support for up to 20 users. The feature is now being tested in select countries.
The idea behind the new group chat feature is to let users collaborate with others along with ChatGPT in the same conversation. So, you can create a group of co-workers, family members or friends and also have ChatGPT in the group to plan, work together and make decisions.
ChatGPT group chat: When will it be available?
OpenAI has already started rolling out the ChatGPT group chat feature on mobile and the web version. Users with Free, Go, Plus, and Team plans will be able to view and use it. However, the feature is currently limited to a few countries like Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan.

The limited rollout is to gain user feedback and fix issues before making the feature available to a wider audience across the globe.
How to use the group chat feature on ChatGPT
Once the feature is available for you, you will see a new “People” icon in the upper-right corner of an existing or new chat. You will then be able to add more people to the same conversation. You can also send invites to others to join the group chat via a link.
At present, it allows up to 20 people to join a group. The company said that users’ personal ChatGPT memory is never shared in the group.
Group chats will have a dedicated labelled section on the side for easy access. All responses by ChatGPT are powered by the new GPT 5.1 model.
How it challenges WhatsApp and Telegram
The new group chat feature on ChatGPT is a serious competitor to platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, as it goes beyond basic messaging. With built-in AI assistance for planning, drafting and decision-making, ChatGPT enables smarter, more productive group conversations that traditional chat apps simply can’t match.
