About three months ago, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Search, a new search engine that was capable of crawling the web for webpages you’re looking for, in contrast the ChatGPT, which only generates information or media. ChatGPT Search was made to rival search engines like Google, Bing, and Baidu. However, the feature was locked to ChatGPT Plus subscribers only.
That changes now. Amidst some quick competition from rival app DeepSeek which provides its own reasoning-based model that rivals OpenAI’s O1 model completely for free, it seems ChatGPT has been forced into opening up its premium tier feature for the world.
That is exactly why starting right now, anyone can use ChatGPT Search, irrespective of whether you have a subscription or not. All you need is the ChatGPT app on your iPhone or Android phone. Alternatively, you can also use the tool on the ChatGPT website.
What is ChatGPT Search?
Just like Google or Bing, ChatGPT Search is a search engine. Instead of generating information, the tool will crawl the web for existing information, bringing you links, documents or media that you’re looking for.

ChatGPT Search is useful when you want to look for something on the web, and not create. This could be details on the new car you’re planning to buy, the web version of your favourite platforms, and more.
How to use ChatGPT Search?
Using the ChatGPT Search feature is really simple. Simply enter your search query in the text field where you would usually enter your prompt. Instead of hitting the send button right away though, tap on the Search button first (shaped like a globe).
This will enable ChatGPT Search and you will be able to quickly search for whatever website or webpage you have been looking for. Unlike the regular ChatGPT, Search uses real-time information to bring you the latest links and pages.
OpenAI has also not set any rate-limits for using ChatGPT Search, meaning free users can use the tool for as long as they need without worrying about running out of prompts.
