Accio nostalgia, with a new cast

HBO’s Harry Potter TV series trailer reveals a new Hogwarts and Christmas 2026 launch

The first proper look at HBO’s Harry Potter series is finally here, and it is doing exactly what any return trip to Hogwarts is supposed to do: stirring up equal parts wonder, scrutiny, and nostalgia.

Unveiled at an HBO event in London, the teaser trailer offers fans their first glimpse of the new Golden Trio, the reimagined Hogwarts, and a supporting cast that will be dissected frame by frame by Potterheads before the Sorting Hat can finish its song.

More importantly, it also confirms that the series will premiere on Christmas 2026, which is earlier than the previously expected 2027 launch.

That alone is enough to make this one of the biggest fantasy TV launches on the calendar. But the teaser also reveals another detail longtime book readers will clock immediately. Season one is officially titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, not Sorcerer’s Stone.

In other words, HBO is leaning toward the original UK naming, which feels like a small but pointed nod to readers who still instinctively say “Philosopher’s” without thinking.

The new Hogwarts class is officially in session

The trailer introduces Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, all stepping into one of the most culturally overexamined school terms in fiction.

From the footage described so far, HBO seems to be going for a more novel-faithful, slower-burn adaptation, with season one covering just the first book.

Among the adult cast, John Lithgow appears as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

For older fans who grew up with the films, this is probably the point where your brain briefly short-circuits and starts trying to reconcile these faces with the ones permanently lodged there since 2001. That is the burden of any reboot, especially one involving the world’s most famous wizard.

Behind the camera, HBO has lined up serious prestige-TV muscle. Succession writer Francesca Gardiner is serving as showrunner, while Game of Thrones veteran Mark Mylod is directing multiple episodes.

Now, whether the series can feel fresh rather than merely reverent will decide if this becomes TV’s next great fantasy obsession or simply another trip back through Platform 9¾ with a shinier ticket.
