Everyone expected iOS 26.3 to be the next update, and it likely will in February. But for now, iPhone users are being treated to a surprise iOS 26.2.1 update.
It’s a small one and isn’t the kind that’d warrant an entire changelog. The highlight is that it’s basically the necessary driver for the second-generation AirTag. If you missed the news, those were announced on Monday.
Support for second-gen trackers and bug fixes
They might carry the same design, but they pack a major upgrade internally. They sport a new Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip – the radio tech allowing for super-accurate location tracking when you are close to an object.
With the new hardware, Precision Finding now works from 50 per cent farther away. That is huge if you are constantly losing keys in deep sofa cushions or weird corners of the house. The speaker is also 50 per cent louder, which should help when you are trying to find it by sound alone. Plus, there is an upgraded Bluetooth chip for better general range.
Anyway, as for the update, it isn’t a massive download since it’s sized around 840MB, so it shouldn’t take long to install. Aside from the tracker support, Apple mentioned this squashes some unspecified bugs. No specific security scares were listed, but it is always good to stay current.
The update is supported for everything from the iPhone 11 onwards. Just head to Settings, tap General, and hit Software Update to grab it.
