Everything you need to know about the new Apple iPhone 15

Apple’s Wonderlust event took the wraps off four new iPhones, including the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apart from bringing in much-anticipated changes (read: USB Type-C connectivity), numerous other exciting announcements were made at the event. If you didn’t have the chance to catch the unveiling live, we have everything you need to know before you zero in on your favourite new iPhone variant.

The iPhone 15 series

Like its predecessor, the iPhone 15 also comes in four variants – iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. One of the first things you are bound to notice is that Apple has extended its Dynamic Island feature to all the models (yes, even the non-Pro ones).

Design: This time around, Apple introduced fresh, pastel hues for its iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus. The colour-infused back panel comes in subdued shades of pink, yellow, green, blue, and black in a polished, matte finish. The new iPhones continue to retain the Ceramic Shield toughened front but also have contoured edges for a better grip.

Display: The iPhone 15 series comes in two sizes – 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch (Plus model). You also get the Super Retina XDR OLED display panel to enjoy content with sharper details, black-and-white balance, as well as colour accuracy. Apart from this, Apple this year takes things up a notch by having 2,000 nits outdoor brightness and 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness.

Camera: Apple enthusiasts eagerly awaiting camera modifications are in for a treat with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus’ camera systems. The dual camera system now has a 48MP main camera sensor for sharper visuals, and users can make the most of 24MP super-high-resolution photos.

Both variants now come equipped with a quad-pixel sensor and a swifter autofocus. Additionally, Apple has also integrated a 2x Telephoto option, giving users three optical-quality zoom levels – 0.5x, 1x, and 2x.

Processor: For both iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, Apple has retained its A16 bionic chipset that can efficiently handle heavy-duty files and gaming. The six-core CPU will ensure a better battery backup, and the five-core GPU is better equipped to handle gaming and graphics-intensive tasks. Despite continuing with the processor from the iPhone 14 series, users can make the most of a power-packed performance with day-to-day tasks and gaming.

Connectivity: Much to everyone’s anticipation, Apple also integrated the USB Type-C connectivity, making it seamless for users to connect their iPhones using any Type-C cable. If you have existing accessories with a lightning port, Apple this year will also be selling lightning to Type-C adapters separately.

Additional features: Apple extended its Dynamic Island experience to the iPhone 15 series by allowing users to track more than one crucial alert. Along with making it more intuitive, the feature can seamlessly adapt to third-party integration, meaning now users can effortlessly get real-time updates on a sports match, flight details and music controls.

iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max top features

Design: Apple has levelled up its iPhone 15 Pro series design by introducing them in an all-new Titanium design, making them the lightest Pro models to be launched. Keeping the contoured edges and Ceramic Shield front for these variants as well, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are available in shades like Black Titanium, White Titanium, Blue Titanium, and Natural Titanium.

Display: Like the base models, the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max flaunt 6.1 and 6.7-inch display sizes, respectively. But the Super Retina XDR display also comes with ProMotion technology and adaptive refresh technology, allowing users a significantly smoother visual experience. Gamers can benefit the most from this responsive technology, resulting in a fluid output.

Camera: Exclusively built for the Pro lineup, Apple has incorporated a 48MP primary camera that can allow users to switch between 24 mm, 28 mm, and 35 mm focal lengths, respectively. In addition to the 48MP ProRAW, the new camera system also supports the 48MP HEIF image format. This is accompanied by a 12MP telephoto lens that is capable of up to 5x optical zoom and a 12MP ultra-wide camera lens that can be used for macro photography.

Processor: Apple unveiled its A17 Pro chip for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, which promises a next-level gaming experience. The chip brings crucial GPU redesigns and offers hardware-accelerated ray tracing for an immersive gaming session. Users can now enjoy certain console games, such as Assasin’s Creed Mirage and Resident Evil 4 Remake, on their iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max variants. Apart from this, the A17 Pro brings improvements for low-light videography and Action mode.

If you have existing accessories with a lightning port, Apple this year will also be selling lightning to Type-C adapters separately.

Additional features: The new variants now have an Action Button on the side that replaces the single function switch. The button has a customisable option for users to personalise their experience, meaning you can add your preferred function to the Action button. It can toggle between several features, including switching to the camera, recording audio and even accessing shortcuts.
