JBL has introduced a new addition to its portable audio lineup in India, and it is aimed at listeners who want something compact without feeling short-changed on performance. The JBL Grip leans into durability, everyday usability, and a touch of AI-driven audio tuning, all wrapped in a design that looks ready for both your desk and your backpack.
At Rs 11,999, it sits in that increasingly competitive mid-range speaker space where portability and personality matter just as much as raw output.
A tougher take on portable sound
The Grip is built around a 16W output with what JBL calls its Pro Sound tuning, powered by a 43 × 80mm full-range driver. On paper, that translates to a frequency response of 70Hz to 20kHz, which should comfortably cover casual listening, whether you are indoors or out.
What stands out here is the inclusion of AI Sound Boost. Instead of simply pushing volume, the speaker analyses what you are playing in real time and adjusts the driver behaviour to reduce distortion, particularly at higher levels. It is a shift from traditional tuning, focusing more on consistency than sheer loudness.
There is also support for Auracast, which opens the door to stereo pairing or linking multiple compatible speakers for a broader soundstage. Bluetooth 5.4 keeps connectivity current, and the JBL Portable app allows for tweaks like ambient lighting control and general sound customisation.
Physically, the speaker leans into its “Grip” name. The upright, can-like design, rope loop, and drop-resistant build suggest it is meant to be carried around. An IP68 rating for dust and water resistance makes it viable for outdoor use.

Battery life is rated at up to 12 hours, with an additional two hours available via a Playtime Boost mode, which prioritises efficiency when needed. A full charge takes around three hours.
JBL Grip: Price and availability in India
The JBL Grip is priced at Rs 11,999 in India and is available in a wide range of finishes, including Black, White, Purple, Red, Blue, and a camo variant. It can be purchased via the JBL India website, e-commerce platforms, and offline retail stores like Croma.
For a category that often blends into sameness, the Grip feels like JBL trying to add a bit more intelligence and durability into the mix, without overcomplicating what is still, at its core, a simple portable speaker.
