A new ColorOS update reveals key AI features that may soon come to OxygenOS too

OnePlus 12 may get its own AI features to rival Galaxy AI after all

When OnePlus launched the OnePlus 12 last month, an expected focus on AI-powered features was met with disappointment. This is because, unlike the Samsung Galaxy S24 series that had launched merely days ago and the same chipset, OnePlus phones didn’t have any AI features up its sleeve.

It was quickly assumed that despite the new on-device AI capabilities of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the OnePlus 12 will be left behind in the AI race. However a new ColorOS update hints at the brand’s eventual turn to AI.

As per a new post by X (previously Twitter) user Mishaal Rahman, a new ColorOS update reveals that Oppo’s ColorOS is bringing in several AI powered features as a part of its next update.

This includes an AI summariser tool that is capable of tracking down various pieces of key information from a live call in real time, as well as numerous generative photo-editing options, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy AI suite.

What does this mean for OnePlus smartphones?

While the new features are coming to Oppo’s flagship phones in China running ColorOS, it is safe to assume the features will also come to flagship OnePlus phones in the near future.

For the uninitiated, this is because OxygenOS and ColorOS have been sharing the same codebase since the past few years. Throughout OxygenOS 13 and OxygenOS 14, we have seen several ColorOS customisation options and other elements pop up on OnePlus phones.

It is very likely that any major features (especially of the generative AI kind) will also make their way to OxygenOS phones. Well, the flagship ones at least.

It remains to be seen when we will get a closer look at the features though, as OnePlus is yet to make the announcement official for its own phones in the global market.
