India’s new multilingual AI assistant

What is Indus AI app by Sarvam that has arrived as ChatGPT, Gemini rival

Sarvam, one of India’s emerging AI startups, has quietly stepped into the consumer space with the launch of its AI assistant app, Indus. The app is now live on Android, iOS and the web, although access is currently limited. The low-key rollout follows the company’s recent work on building foundational large language models in India.

Indus AI app focuses on multilingual and task-driven assistance

Indus is positioned as an AI assistant designed specifically for Indian users. According to the app listing, it has been developed entirely in India and centres strongly on multilingual conversations.

Users can begin a chat in English and seamlessly switch to Hindi or other Indian languages mid-conversation without restarting the session. This reflects everyday speech patterns common across the country.

Beyond basic question-and-answer interactions, Indus supports voice input, allowing users to speak their queries instead of typing. The assistant can also search online information and provide detailed responses when required. Sarvam appears to be testing AI agents within the app as well, which could help automate certain tasks instead of only responding to prompts.

The app includes document tools that allow users to write and edit content directly within the interface. It also supports file uploads such as PDFs and images. Once uploaded, the assistant analyses the content and answers questions based on the material, making it useful for students, professionals and researchers.

Sarvam has not officially confirmed the model powering Indus. However, the company recently introduced two large language models, Sarvam-30B and Sarvam-105B, at the India AI Impact Summit 2026. Industry observers believe the app may be running on one of these in-house systems.

How to use Indus

If you are interested in trying out the new AI assistant, here is how you can get started.

Step 2: Sign up using your phone number, Google account or Apple ID and complete verification.
Step 3: Join the waitlist if prompted, or enter an invite code to begin using the assistant immediately.
