Sony has just announced that PC gamers playing officially released ports of PlayStation Studio games will no longer require a PlayStation Account.
The change is implemented for select games for now, and includes titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which comes out for PC gamers tomorrow, but also others like The Last of US Part II Remastered, God of War Ragnarök and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.
The move comes after Sony faced massive criticism for adding the PSN account requirements for PC gamers for games like Helldivers 2.

For the uninitiated, a PlayStation Network account (PSN account) is required for users to purchase and access games on any PlayStation series console, including the new Sony PlayStation 5 Slim. However, PC gamers don’t need one thanks to other authorised digital distributors like Steam and Epic Games also selling these games.

While it is true that a unifying account would be required for multiplayer gameplay, where PC players would likely be playing against other PC players but also console players, what had gamers raging was Sony’s persistence on requiring a PSN account even for single-player campaigns.
Sony would still like you to create a PSN account
While the mandatory requirement of a PSN account has been taken away, Sony clearly still wants PC gamers to create a login, or use their existing one at least. PC gamers who do so will soon be incentivised with special in-game bonuses like trophies, resources and outfits, depending on the game in question.
More details on the change are up on Sony’s blog post for the same.
For Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which releases for Windows-based gaming laptops and desktops tomorrow, the perks of logging in with a PSN account include early unlocking of the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 suit. Not much of a perk if you ask us, considering both these suits can anyway be unlocked later in the game.
