Gamers face steeper console prices worldwide

Sony hikes PS5 prices globally and India could be next

The cost of getting into the Sony PlayStation 5 ecosystem is going up once more. Sony has announced a fresh round of global price hikes for its consoles, citing rising component costs and broader economic pressures. The new pricing kicks in from April 2, 2026, and it is not just a minor adjustment.

In the US, both standard PS5 models will see a $100 (around Rs 9,400) jump. The disc version now sits at $649.99 (approx. Rs 61,000), while the digital edition climbs to $599.99 (approx. Rs 56,300).

The bigger shock comes with the PlayStation 5 Pro, which jumps by a whopping $150 (approx. Rs 14,100) all the way up to $899.99 (around Rs 84,500), pushing it firmly into premium territory even before it reaches markets like India. Sony is also increasing the price of the PlayStation Portal remote player to $249.99 (approx. Rs 23,500).

Sony’s Isabelle Tomatis, VP of global marketing, framed the move as a necessary response to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape”, with memory chips and other key components becoming more expensive.

PS5 price hike: A familiar pattern, just sooner than expected

This is the second global price increase for the PS5 in under a year. Back in August 2025, Sony raised prices by $50 (approx Rs 4,700) across models, a move that already tested the patience of a console audience used to gradual price drops over a generation, not increases.

That expectation has been flipped this cycle. Between supply chain shifts, semiconductor pricing, and currency fluctuations, consoles are no longer immune to the same inflationary pressures hitting everything from smartphones to GPUs.

The PS5 Pro’s pricing is particularly telling. Positioned as a high-performance upgrade, it is now inching closer to gaming PC territory in several markets, which will inevitably raise questions about how much headroom Sony believes it really has with enthusiasts.

What the PS5 price hike likely means for India

India was not mentioned in Sony’s announcement, but the pattern is predictable. Historically, global hikes have filtered through to Indian pricing within weeks or months.

Right now, the PS5 Digital Edition starts at Rs 49,990, while the disc version is priced at Rs 54,990. The last revision added roughly Rs 5,000 to both models. If Sony mirrors the current increase, Indian buyers could be looking at a noticeably steeper jump this time around.

There is also the matter of the PS5 Pro. While it has not officially launched in India yet, recent sightings on the BIS database suggest that a release is on the horizon, likely timed with major titles like Grand Theft Auto VI expected later this year.

So, if you were waiting for prices to drop before jumping into the PlayStation ecosystem, that window is not just closing, it may already have passed. Best to grab a deal now, before the price hikes take effect in India.
