You might want to get comfortable if you’ve been eagerly waiting for Sony to announce the PlayStation 6. Because a new analyst report suggests that we probably won’t see the next-gen console until at least 2029.
As reported by IGN, a senior analyst at MST International who covers gaming and tech companies, recently published a Japanese language report ahead of Sony’s third quarter financial results. And the big takeaway here is that Sony seems pretty committed to keeping the PS5 around for a while longer.
Possibly extending the PS5's lifespan even further
“There’s a high likelihood that the PS6 launch will occur after 2028,” Gibson wrote in his analysis. That’s later than what most people were expecting, especially after PlayStation’s own Mark Cerny dropped hints about a “future console” arriving in “a few years’ time” during a YouTube video back in October.
Now, most folks interpreted that as pointing toward a late 2028 release. But as it’s turned out, we might be waiting even longer.
As for the reason behind the delay, well, it looks like Sony is actually doing really well with the current generation. Gibson noted that PS5 user activity is hitting all-time highs, and the company seems more focused on keeping those players engaged rather than pushing new hardware out the door. The network services side of things – that’s your PSN subscriptions and digital purchases – is apparently performing strong too.
There’s also the not-so-small matter of component costs. Memory prices are climbing because companies like Nvidia and Google are gobbling up supply for their AI chips. Gibson suggested that Sony’s current inventory should protect them in the short term, but those rising costs could become a problem down the line.
And honestly, with GTA 6 hopefully launching later this year exclusively on consoles, Sony probably figures the PS5 has plenty of juice left in it anyway.
