Upgraded BEE star rating system in India 2026: Everything you should know

What was once voluntary is becoming mandatory in 2026. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency is cracking down on fake energy efficiency star labelling and updating the standards to make appliances more energy efficient. As energy demand continues to grow, the upgraded BEE star rating system in India is taking a consumer-focused approach to reflect rising appliance usage and meet stricter climate goals.

BEE star labelling

BEE star labelling is the official energy efficiency system in India. It was introduced by the Ministry of Power in 2006, and it uses a simple scale of 1-star to 5-star, where more stars indicate lower energy consumption for the same level of performance. If you recently went shopping for an air conditioner, refrigerator, or television, you would have seen the BEE star labels on them.

Earlier, this star labelling was voluntary on items like frost-free refrigerators, direct cool refrigerators, deep freezers, televisions, and ultra-high definition televisions. From January 1, 2026, the energy efficiency star-labelling has been made mandatory on a host of appliances, including refrigerators, televisions, LPG gas stoves, cooling towers, chillers, deep freezers, distribution transformers, and grid-connected solar inverters.

The 2026 upgraded BEE star rating system in India not only covers a broad range of appliances but also replaces older efficiency thresholds to match modern technology improvements. Here are three changes you need to know:

– Recalibrated energy consumption limits: In 2026, your appliances will have to consume even less power than before to earn the coveted 5-star energy efficiency rating.
– Realistic testing conditions: The upgraded BEE star ratings also account for changing weather patterns, especially higher ambient temperatures and longer operating hours.
– Shorter validity period: The BEE star labelling has a shorter validity period to ensure that efficiency claims stay current and relevant.

The upgraded BEE star labelling system for 2026 will lead to consumers buying more energy-efficient appliances than before, and the star-rating itself will become more trustworthy.

BEE star rating

The key thing to note here is that these changes are not going to be visible on a paper or a gazette notification. There will be real and visible changes, and the BEE star rating will see the biggest change. The upgraded 2026 rules mean an appliance with a 4-star or 5-star rating under older rules may no longer qualify for that rating. It does not mean that older appliances have become worse in performance, but the bar for energy efficiency has been redefined.

Take an example of an air conditioner. A 5-star AC today delivers much better energy efficiency than a 5-star model from 2020. This is because of revised and stricter ISEER (Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) requirements. The recalibration will also extend to refrigerators, where models with improved compressors and insulation will score the top-tier ratings.

For consumers, a higher-rated appliance under the upgraded 2026 BEE star rating system will result in tangible annual savings in the form of lower electricity bills. It will also act as future-proofing for even tighter energy norms down the line, while lowering carbon emissions. For manufacturers, the upgraded BEE star rating will act as a nudge to adopt smart sensors, advanced materials, and inverter technology.
