What is an SoC?

While purchasing your last smartphone, you may have watched several reviews or read articles, where they frequently mentioned the term SoC. Ever wondered just what it means? Well, we’re here to tell you just that.

What an SoC is and what it does

An SoC, or System on a chip, is essentially an integrated circuit that integrates an entire system on it. In other words, it is a fully functional computer in a tiny box. The terminology is more relevant in the context of small devices such as smartphones and tablets.

One of the biggest advantages of an SoC is its compact size which makes it perfect for smaller devices. They also require less power than traditional CPUs. SoCs determine the processing power of all devices, and manufacturers are continuously working towards producing and perfecting new SoCs with improved performance, efficiency, and more. Devices which use an SoC are not just limited to smartphones but they are also used in a variety of Internet of Things, embedded systems, cars, and more. Nowadays, SoC technology is also being used in smaller-sized personal computers and laptops to reduce power consumption and improve efficiency.
