Troubleshooting a phone that turns off on its own

Why does your phone keep turning off by itself?

One of the common problems with modern day smartphones is that they often keep turning off by themselves. This can be really annoying if you are in the middle of reading an article, watching a reel, navigating through Maps, or simply texting someone. While there are many causes, the most common ones include heat, use of heavy apps leading to memory issues, patchy networks, and older devices. If you have been wondering why your phone keeps turning off by itself then the good news is that you can easily diagnose and fix it.

How to stop your phone from turning off by itself

From overheating and patchy network to battery issues, here are the reasons why your smartphone keeps turning off by itself and the steps you can take to stop your phone from turning off by itself.

1. Overheating
This is one of the most common causes for a phone to turn off by itself and is especially common during summer. When your phone gets too hot, during harsh summer or while gaming for a long duration, it automatically powers down to prevent heat damage. Your smartphone might overheat due to following reasons:

– Long gaming sessions
– Brightness set to high in outdoor heat
– Using the phone while charging
– Heavy apps running in the background
Solution: Let the phone cool down, remove the case, close apps, and reduce screen brightness. Avoid gaming while charging and direct exposure to sunlight.

2. Battery
If your battery has degraded (gone through too many charge cycles) then it may no longer hold charge for longer. This will lead to random shutdowns and is a common cause among budget and low-end devices.
Solution: Check battery health using built-in tools on iPhone and Android and if the capacity is below 70 per cent, consider replacing the battery.

3. Charging issue
Using low-quality chargers or a clogged charging port can also result in inconsistent charging, leading the phone to switch off.
Solution: Use your certified chargers and clean the charging port gently if possible.

4. Screen timeout
While phone turning off is a real issue, another issue plaguing smartphone users is screen turning off quickly. This could be because of your screen timeout settings.
Solution: On Android, go to Settings > Display > Screen timeout and on iPhone, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock to change the screen timeout duration.

5. Storage
If you have a low-end device with limited memory then the operating system will struggle to keep running essential functions. When the available memory dips below 5-10%, your device might experience random shutdowns.
Solution: Declutter your device by deleting old photos, screenshots, and uninstalling unused apps.

6. Software bugs
A buggy software update or malware might also be the cause for your phone to keep turning off itself.
Solution: Update your phone’s operating system, uninstall unverified apps, and perform a virus scan to remove any malware.

7. Hardware issue
If none of the above solutions stop your phone from turning off itself then it might be due to a hardware issue or a loose component.
Solution: Visit authorised service centres to get your device screened thoroughly for any hardware problems.
