Soon you’ll be able to perform a Windows 11 update without restarting your computer

While updates are important, no one really likes them when they show up unannounced on your laptop. More often than not, untimely updates can lead to a loss of data. A new Microsoft Windows 11 24H2 update however will ensure users don’t have to reboot their system for a security patch.

Windows 11 hot patching: What's there to know?

According to a Windows Central report, the feature will allow users to install the security patches without having to restart their laptop or desktop. That’s not all, it will additionally also install new features and capabilities. Microsoft has previously used this to push updates on Xbox and Windows servers for a while now, but it will also begin rolling it out for Windows 11 in the near future.

For starters, the company plans to enable this add-on to X86-based Windows 11 PCs first and will soon push it for ARM-based computers later next year. It will ideally be used for installing monthly security patches and bug fixes along with major OS updates. That said, while the update may happen alongside or in the background, users will still have to restart their laptops to see the changes take place effectively.

Apart from this, users will also be able to see an estimated time of update, which will give them a clearer idea of how long it will take. 

How does hot patching on Windows 11 work?

Microsoft will essentially be able to implement these changes with Cumulative Update technology that allows security fixes to go through using a Virtualisation Based Security (VBS). Simply put, this allows “patching the in-memory code” into running processes without having to reboot the system. 

With the company adding as many as 150 new features in its 23H2 update, there might be quite a few improvements in the pipeline to enjoy before Windows 12 drops for users.
