YouTube’s new Premium tier plan is built for two

Tired of shelling out for two separate YouTube Premium accounts but not quite sold on the full-blown family plan? YouTube might just have the fix. The streaming giant is quietly introducing a new two-person Premium plan in India, which lands perfectly between its solo and family tiers.

Now appearing for a limited number of users on YouTube’s official site, the two-person Premium plan is priced at Rs 219 per month. That’s Rs 80 less than the family plan and a decent bargain considering that two solo accounts would cost close to Rs 300 together.

Whether you’re a couple, roomies, or just two ad-hating besties, this new option gives you shared perks like ad-free videos, offline downloads, and background playback. No need to wrangle your entire household into a Google Family group.

Naturally, there are a few fine-print conditions. Both people must be at least 13 years old, be part of the same Google Family group, and live under the same roof. Also, switching between family groups is restricted. Google’s hoping for a little commitment here, at least for a year.

India now joins a handful of markets, including France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, where this plan is being tested. YouTube says it’s “exploring new ways to deliver more flexibility and value,” and if the response is strong, the new plan might just become a fixture in its global pricing lineup.

How to upgrade to the two-person YouTube Premium plan

To see if you’re eligible and make the switch, here’s how you can check via browser:

Step 1: Click on your YouTube profile picture in the top right corner
Step 2: Go to ‘Purchases and memberships’
Step 3: Under ‘Premium,’ click on the ‘Manage membership’ drop-down
Step 4: Look for the ‘Two-person membership’ option > Select upgrade > Confirm purchase

This option may not be available to everyone just yet, but YouTube says it will expand access to more Indian users soon.
