YouTube Premium users can now make the most of new ‘free’ features

Google-owned YouTube has always been generous when it comes to features for its Premium users. The platform, only a few months ago, promised over two dozen new improvements for its smartphone and web app. And if that’s not all, it recently also mentioned how it plans to introduce new features and perks for its Premium tier at no additional subscription cost. Here’s what they are and everything you need to know about them:

YouTube introduces new Premium features

According to YouTube, the new features are experimental in nature, and they will be rolled out for all its Premium users. In a blog post, the brand mentioned how the additions aim to ‘enhance’ how a user consumes content on the platform.

It further states that those with a Premium subscription can sign up on youtube.com/new to have access to these features. Some of the features provided by the platform include:

High-quality audio: Users with YouTube Premium will be able to enjoy high-quality 256kbps audio on music videos and other related content.

Picture-in-Picture for YouTube Shorts on iOS: iOS users can now opt for a Picture-in-Picture for YouTube Shorts. This means you can browse other apps while watching a favourite video of your choice.

Smart Downloads for YouTube Shorts on iPhone: Recommended Shorts will automatically be downloaded for offline viewing if you’re an iOS user.

“Jump ahead” on the web: Web browsers will now allow users to ‘jump ahead’ to the best part of the video. This feature was previously available only for mobile devices.

Faster playback speeds on mobile: Lastly, YouTube mentions how it has incorporated expanded playback speed options which offer up to 4x on mobile devices.

Apart from this, the platform is also working on its AI-driven features for YouTube Music. This means you can soon ask for ‘Bollywood workout tracks’ or ‘relaxing lo-fi music’. Based on this, it will create a customised playlist for just you. This feature was earlier rolled out to select users as an experiment; however, the brand has finally expanded it to those based in the UK and Ireland.

When will these features be available for everyone?

YouTube, in its blog post, has mentioned how the features have immediately begun rolling out for Premium users. If you don’t see them on the app, you might want to check if you have an active subscription or are signed up for its experimental features. However, if you still don’t see these features, don’t fret, as the platform could be rolling them out in a phased manner. For more such news, don’t forget to stay subscribed to Unboxed by Croma.
