A Silent Voice is finally on Crunchyroll; and it still hits just as hard

For a platform that pretty much owns anime streaming in 2026, Crunchyroll has always had a few surprising blind spots. A Silent Voice was one of them; but not anymore.

Nearly ten years after the anime film first released, Kyoto Animation’s much-loved tearjerker has officially landed on Crunchyroll. The update went live on March 20, and while it might feel like just another catalogue addition on paper, this one carries a bit more weight for longtime fans.

There is a catch though. Like most anime licensing stories, availability is tied to region. Right now, the film is streaming in the US and Canada, with multiple language options and subtitles. No word yet on when or if the availability will expand further, so some fans will still be stuck waiting.

What A Silent Voice is about

If you have spent any time around anime communities, A Silent Voice tends to come up sooner or later. Not because it is flashy or trend-driven, but because it lingers.

Directed by Naoko Yamada, the film follows Shoya Ishida, a former bully dealing with the fallout of his actions, and Shoko Nishimiya, the deaf classmate he once targeted. Years later, he tracks her down to apologise, and what follows is a heart-warming tale of redemption.

It is a film that sits in uncomfortable spaces. Bullying, disability, anxiety, isolation. None of it is softened for easy viewing, which is exactly why it hits as hard as it does. Even compared to other anime films, it plays out with a kind of intensity that sticks with you.

The story is adapted from Yoshitoki Oima’s manga, though the film trims a fair bit of side material to fit its runtime.

Why this release matters for Crunchyroll

Crunchyroll has spent the last few years becoming the go-to place for anime. Weekly simulcasts, massive seasonal drops, and an ever-growing catalogue. But if you looked closely, some essential films were still scattered across other platforms.

A Silent Voice bounced between Prime Video and Netflix depending on where you lived, which made it oddly difficult to recommend. You could tell someone to watch it, but not always tell them where.

Bringing it onto Crunchyroll does not just pad out the library, it rounds it out. This is the kind of film that defines why people get into anime in the first place, and having it in the same place as everything else just makes sense.
