The dessert-based naming scheme continues

Android 17’s secret codename may have leaked and it will make you drool

Google continues its behind-the-scenes tradition of naming Android versions after desserts. The team has reportedly chosen ‘Cinnamon Bun’ as the codename for Android 17, a playful nod following Android 16’s ‘Baklava’ codename.

Even though Google stopped publicly using dessert names after Android Pie, these sweet references still quietly live on internally. If you are an Android phone user, here’s what’s coming for you.

Everything we know about Android 17

The codename was spotted by Mishaal Rahman, who has long tracked hidden details in Android builds. Using dessert names helps Google keep things organised in alphabetical order inside their labs, with ‘Baklava’ for Android 16, now ‘Cinnamon Bun’ for Android 17.

The codename is likely to show up in experimental Android 17 builds, especially at API level 37.0, but it will not appear in the versions released to regular users. This means you will most likely see ‘Android17’ when you head to Settings once you update your device in the future.

While features of Android 17 remain under wraps, expected improvements include better display handling for tablets and foldables, along with performance, security, privacy, and user interface refinements.

AI integration is also rumoured to play a bigger role, followed by the smart features within the operating system.

This update keeps the quirky treat conventions alive. However, as it is with other reports, Google is yet to officially confirm the codename. That being said, take the above information with a grain of salt.

As development moves forward and attention shifts from Android 16 to 17, more concrete details are sure to pop up, but for now, we have our dessert, and it’s Cinnamon Bun.
