A workstation desktop makes a comeback

Apple iMac Pro with M5 Max chip could be in the works

Way back in 2017, Apple announced the iMac Pro, an all-in-one workstation computer capable of handling high-performance tasks. While this product was discontinued in March 2021, a new development reveals that the brand could be working on the next-generation iMac Pro. Here’s a look at the early details of the device surface so far.

iMac Pro could be designed for professional market

According to Macrumors report, the leaked kernel debug kit files used by Apple engineers have revealed the existence of a new iMac Pro. Although the name of the device is not explicitly mentioned, the internal files do carry some identifiers, such as codenames and platform names.

The kernel debug kit files reveal a new iMac with model number J833c running platform H17C. For those unfamiliar, H17C is the codename associated with the M5 Max chip. Therefore, it can be deduced that an iMac with M5 Max chip is in the works.

Since the M5 Max is an upcoming high-end chip, this device may end up in the market with the IMac Pro moniker. The M5 Max chip is slated for announcement in 2026, which indicates that the iMac Pro may debut in the said year.

This new finding corroborates a leak by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who previously revealed that the brand is working on an iMac with a large screen designed for the professional market.

Future Mac models revealed

The kernel debug kit files have also revealed upcoming MacBook configurations. It has revealed that the MacBook Pro will arrive in 14-inch and 16-inch editions featuring M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.

It also reveals other models, such as a 14-inch MacBook Pro in M6, M6 Pro, and Max options, a 16-inch MacBook Pro in M6 Pro and M6 Max variants, and a 13-inch and 15-inch M5-powered MacBook Air. There’s a low-cost MacBook with the Apple A18 Pro chip also in the works.

Apart from MacBook configurations, it also revealed M5- and M5 Pro-powered Mac mini editions and a Mac Studio equipped with M5 Max and M5 Ultra options.
