Apple iPhone 17 battery sizes officially revealed, thanks to EU regulations

Apple has historically obscured actual battery sizes behind “hours of video playback” metrics. But new European Union regulations have pushed Apple to reveal the exact milliamp-hour ratings for its entire iPhone 17 lineup.

The official numbers are now live on Apple’s German product pages. The standard iPhone 17 houses a 3,692mAh battery, while the 17 Pro gets a respectable 4,252mAh. The top-tier 17 Pro Max leads the family with a massive 5,088mAh cell.

Then there is the all-new iPhone Air. Due to its ultra-slim titanium design, it contains a 3,149mAh battery, the smallest of the group. This places its capacity about 11 percent below the base iPhone 17 and gives it just 62 percent of the energy storage of the Pro Max.

On paper, that number might raise a few eyebrows. But Apple is likely betting that its tight integration of hardware and software can make those raw numbers less relevant. The company’s official claim is that the iPhone Air can achieve up to 27 hours of video playback on a single charge, which it argues is plenty for a full day of use.

Also playing a role here is a version of the A19 Pro chip specifically designed for the Air. For one, it features a trimmed down version of the GPU found on the Pro models, with five-core graphics instead of six.

Still, Apple is seemingly aware that for some, a full day might not be enough. That’s where the new MagSafe battery pack comes in, an accessory launched alongside the phone and built with the Air in mind. This add-on provides a neat solution for power users. It snaps onto the back of the device, boosting total battery capacity by a significant 65 percent and extending video playback to an impressive 40 hours.

The pack itself isn’t just a dumb battery either. It supports 12W fast charging and incorporates Apple’s intelligent battery management system, which helps to balance charging speeds with long-term battery health.
