Spoiler alert: It’s the ‘answer-engine’

Apple is working on a ChatGPT-like product, but it’s not exactly a chatbot

Apple never fancied the idea of a chatbot. Even when the time came, it used ChatGPT to back its Apple Intelligence features. As a result, we have an improved Siri and some other on-device generative AI tools. But it appears that Apple may soon rely on its very own ‘answer engine’ to crawl the web to respond to your queries.

The new answer engine in development isn’t exactly a chatbot; rather, it’s a feature that lets users access the ‘world knowledge’ without fully relying on a third-party app or service. Intrigued? Here’s everything you need to know.

All about Apple’s upcoming ‘answer engine’

Earlier this year, Apple reportedly formed a new team called Answers, Knowledge, and Information (AKI). This team has been working on in-house AI services that offer a ChatGPT-like search experience.

But it’s not exactly a chatbot that Apple plans to introduce. Rather, it’s said to offer search capabilities to Apple Intelligence. Currently, Apple Intelligence doesn’t offer search capabilities, unlike its competitors, such as Google.

Having said that, Apple’s answer engine is expected to power Apple Intelligence, giving it search capabilities like never before. The feature will crawl the web and bring the world’s knowledge to Apple users, right on their iPhone, iPad, and Mac. As said above, this experience may not be via a chatbot.

Having an in-house AI feature will let Apple keep up with the ongoing AI race. However, it’s unclear when the Californian giant plans to unveil the feature. But it’s too early to conclude anything about the answer engine.

Meanwhile, Apple appears to still explore partnerships with AI startups like Perplexity. Not to mention, its ChatGPT reliance still stays.
