Is that iOS app not working properly on your iPhone? Well, “It just works” is a well-earned reputation that many Apple products have. It’s one of the key reasons people buy iPhones and stubbornly stick with them. Things can and do go wrong, however, and that app that once worked properly on your iPhone doesn’t really work like it should.
Finding a fix to such a problem isn’t always obvious, or easy to come by. Here are some of the fixes for Apple apps not working properly on your iPhone.
Restart your phone
The go-to fix for most issues is simply restarting your phone. A quick restart can resolve just about every software issue you’re having with your phone. Trying to understand the problem is all well and good in theory, but powering off the phone is a great way to just soft reset running apps and get things going again. It’s not a long-term fix for a truly buggy experience or bugged out app, but this technique is largely effective.

To do this, open the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right of the display and then press and hold the power button that shows up. Then swipe across the shutdown toggle to power off the phone. To turn the phone on, just press the sleep/wake button after a few seconds.
Check for updates
One common issue for apps getting stuck or not working is that they’re simply out of date. This is especially common among apps that require a constant internet connection and/or need to interact with financial services. This includes banking and payment apps.
Outdated apps can be a security risk and might be blocked from accessing sensitive information without an update. It’s also possible that the app is a few updates behind and no longer has the right protocols for accessing its servers.
To check for updates, head to the App Store, tap your account picture in the top right, select Apps > My Apps, and check that the app is updated.
Quit and restart the app
Another simple fix is to quit and restart the app. This can be done by opening the app switcher and swiping up on the errant app to close it. Apps can get stuck for various reasons, and this helps reset the app without affecting anything else on the phone.
Make sure you have enough storage
An uncommon issue, but one that people can run into, is that the app no longer has enough storage space to function. Some apps will write data to your internal storage, and if there isn’t enough, will not work normally and might get stuck. Clear up some storage by deleting unnecessary apps, photos (take a backup first), videos, or downloads. Freeing up a couple of GB should be enough for most apps.

For more persistent issues, we’d recommend reaching out to the app developer. In very rare instances, constantly freezing apps is a sign of a failing phone and you might need to get it serviced. Sometimes, and especially on older phones, replacing the battery is all that’s needed.
