Last week, Open AI officially announced the arrival of the group chat feature on ChatGPT, allowing up to 20 users to collaborate. In its official blog, the company revealed that the early pilot received strong feedback, and the feature will now reach all users across all its subscription plans, including the free plan.
ChatGPT group chat: Things to know
With the global rollout in progress, ChatGPT’s group feature allows a user to send invites to up to 20 people to be part of a shared conversation space. The feature, which was successfully tested in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan, allows friends, family members and co-workers to collaborate while ChatGPT participates when required.

The system copies an existing chat into a group version, letting people join through an invite link even if they create a new account. Each participant can react to messages and mention ‘ChatGPT’ directly for a response, and access tools such as naming the group and adding a group profile picture.
Currently, ChatGPT uses 5.1 model by default to determine the best model for each response, and rate limits apply when ChatGPT sends messages. It should be noted that the content within group chats remains separate from personal chat history, and ChatGPT does not pull from or form new memories in shared threads.
As mentioned, the ChatGPT group chat feature is available on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans.
How to use the group chat feature on ChatGPT
To start a group chat, users can click on “Add People” on the web browser version or its icon on the Android/iOS app. From there, users can add or remove participants, mute alerts and give ChatGPT specific instructions for that conversation.
The assistant has been trained to understand when to contribute and when to step back based on the flow of conversation. Open AI says this pilot is only the beginning, with plans to refine group chat behaviour as more users adopt the feature globally.
