A large freezer such as a chest or upright freezer isn’t very common in India, but it’s a very useful purchase for people who like buying in bulk or for those who like to meal prep or cook in large batches. A chest freezer or upright deep freezer offers a lot of storage volume in different formats, and what you choose depends on the kind of storage you need.
Chest freezer: Great long-term storage
A chest freezer is usually used in scenarios where you need long-term ‘deep freeze’ storage, especially in areas prone to power cuts. Much like a chest – hence the name – these freezers open from the top with food and other products for storage nestled at the bottom of what is essentially a large bin or chest.

The advantage of such a design is that the cold air largely remains in the fridge even when the door is open, cold air being heavier. It’s been known for such freezers to maintain foods at an adequately low temperature for several days following a power outage.
The downside of course is that the contents of chest freezers aren’t easily accessible. Since the food is placed in layers from the bottom to the top, and you can only access one layer at a time, careful stacking is needed to optimise usage and accessibility. Otherwise you might need to empty half the fridge to access something you need at the bottom.
Upright freezers: Accessible, high-volume storage
These freezers look very much like a regular fridge with the difference being that the entire volume is used as a freezer. Since storage is vertical, the internal storage volume is usually sectioned by racks and shelves. This allows for much better optimisation of the storage space and also improves accessibility.
The one downside versus a chest freezer is that the cold air does escape when the door is opened, making it somewhat less efficient for long-term storage. However, if you just need a large freezer that you need more frequent access to, an upright freezer is a great choice.
Which one should you choose?
We’re of the opinion that an upright freezer is more suitable for the majority of people. Chest freezers excel when long-term storage is required, but upright freezers are more practical for the average person, offering both great cooling and accessibility. They’re also much more efficient, have a smaller footprint, and require less maintenance.
