Galaxy S26 Pro moniker debunked, may prioritise AI tuning over camera hardware

There has been a lot of chatter about the Samsung Galaxy S26 series over the past few days. A recent report revealed that the Galaxy S26 Edge has reportedly been cancelled and will be replaced by the Galaxy S26 Plus, which was initially rumoured to take the Edge moniker. Now, new details have emerged about the base variant, revealing its official name and camera specifications.

Samsung Galaxy S26 name to remain intact

Previous rumours suggested that Samsung might drop the Galaxy S26 name and instead rebrand it as the Galaxy S26 Pro. However, according to a new report by Sammobile, the company will continue with the same naming convention as previous Galaxy S generations. This means the upcoming flagship lineup will include the Galaxy S26, Galaxy S26 Plus, and Galaxy S26 Ultra models.

Another report from the same publication, citing X (formerly Twitter) user @erenylmaz075, claims that the Galaxy S26 has been spotted in the One UI 8.5 firmware. The listing shows that the device with model number SM-S942B will feature a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL S5KGN3 primary camera. For context, SM-S942B is believed to be the model number for the Galaxy S26.

The firmware further reveals that the Galaxy S26’s triple rear camera setup will include a 12MP Sony IMX564 ultra-wide lens and a 10MP ISOCELL S5K3K1 telephoto camera. On the front, it will feature a 10MP ISOCELL S5K3LU selfie camera.

Surprisingly, these are the same camera sensors found on the Galaxy S25, suggesting that the Galaxy S26 may not offer major hardware improvements. Instead, Samsung appears to be focusing on AI-powered image processing to deliver a superior photography experience through enhanced tuning and computational imaging.

The One UI 8.5 firmware also indicates that the Galaxy S26 will feature a 4,300mAh battery, a notable upgrade from the 4,000mAh unit found on the Galaxy S25.

As for other specifications, reports suggest that the S26 will retain a 6.2-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, it is expected to be powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2600 chipset. The entire Galaxy S26 lineup will reportedly ship with One UI 8.5 based on Android 16.

Expected launch timeline

The Samsung Galaxy S26 series is expected to debut in January 2026, continuing Samsung’s tradition of early-year Galaxy S launches.
