Google’s AI features are finally making their way to the popular email app for Android

Gmail for Android is getting a Gemini-powered upgrade soon; here’s what you should know

It’s been about two months since Google first embarked on what it is calling the ‘Gemini Era,’ having updated its Bard chatbot to the same name, and also updated it to be powered by an LLM of the same name. Since then, Gemini has also been rolled out for a host of Google Suite apps, both the desktop versions, as well as Android smartphones and iPhones.

And the latest addition to the list of Gemini-powered apps from Google happens to be Gmail for Android. Here’s all you need to know.

Summarise this email feature on Gmail: What it is and how it works

Google tipster AssembleDebug has found a “Summarise this email” option in the upcoming Gmail for Android app (version 2024.03.31.621006929). The feature is designed to give a receiver a synopsis of a lengthy email or email chain if they don’t have time to read through it all. The feature, for the unaware, is already available on Gmail for desktop.

The “summarise this email” option appears just below the email title/subject. However, tapping this button, for now, doesn’t do anything. Once the feature is enabled though, it’s expected to most likely function in a manner very similar to how it does on the web version of Gmail.

People with access to Gemini for Google Workspace on the web for desktops and laptops can currently tap the Ask Gemini button on Gmail, which opens up a sidebar with suggestions such as “What’s this email about?” amongst others. The feature is expected to work similarly on the Android version of the app as well.

Gemini integration on Gmail for Android

A dedicated option for Gemini has also been found within the three-dot menu inside the email thread, in the aforementioned version of the app for Android smartphones. However, tapping on it currently shows an empty drop-down panel at the moment. This panel presumably provides access to Google’s Gemini chatbot, and more such features.

Bear in mind that these upgrades are not live yet. There has been no announcement from Google when the feature will be rolled out for Android devices either. However, as and when it does, it could give Gmail the ammunition it to take on rivals such as Microsoft Outlook.
