Google Chrome would soon be able to order groceries for you

Google has just unleashed perhaps the most significant update in Chrome’s history. The company has injected its Gemini AI model directly into the browser on desktop and mobile. The aim is to make browsing smarter, safer, and much more productive by anticipating your needs right from the address bar.

Summarise tabs, book appointments, and fight scams

The Gemini integration is rolling out now for Mac and Windows users, starting with the United States. Mobile support on Android and iOS is following close behind.

Initially, it can clarify complex information on any webpage you are viewing. Soon though, Google plans to introduce “agentic” capabilities that will transform Gemini into a personal assistant. It will be able to handle tedious multi-step tasks for you all while you focus on other things.

An example shows it ordering groceries for you with nothing but a prompt from your end. It seamlessly controls the cursor and even types in details for you.

The new feature also promises to tame your tab situation if you’re the kind that cycles between hundreds of them at a time.

That’s because Gemini can now work across multiple open tabs. You can ask it to compare information or consolidate details from various sites into a single itinerary for travel planning. It will even be able to recall pages you visited in the past from a vague description.

Another tweak is that you can access Google Search’s powerful AI Mode directly from the omnibox and even get an AI-generated overview of your current page in a side panel.

The upgrade also enhances security. Google is using Gemini Nano to bolster Chrome’s Safe Browsing feature, expanding its ability to identify and block sophisticated tech support and phishing scams. The AI will also handle spammy notifications more effectively and present permission requests less intrusively.

The features haven’t rolled out in India yet but expect them to land soon.
