Google imposes new RAM and storage requirements for Android phones; check eligibility, details

This may be a good time to ensure your Android smartphone has enough storage and RAM capacity

Google imposes new RAM and storage requirements for Android phones; check eligibility, details

While it’s generally considered good to have more storage capacity on your device, several Android smartphone makers shipped devices with as little as 32GB of storage. This was typically to make these smartphones more affordable, and in turn, accessible for a larger audience. However, a new mandate by Google imposes new storage and RAM requirements on brands. Wondering what this means for you? Here’s what you should know.

Why has Google imposed a minimum RAM and storage requirement?

Believe it or not, your Android operating system takes up a huge chunk of the storage and RAM on your smartphone. Despite its best efforts, Google has not been able to curb and compress Android files and apps for its low-end hardware.

For phones with 16GB storage, this usually results in a lag and an overall poor user experience. To tackle this, Google has reinforced a ‘minimum storage requirement’ for its Android devices.

What does this mean for your Android phone?

Users who want their phones updated with Android 15 will now be required to have a minimum of 32GB internal storage. According to an article published by Android Authority, Google states that 75 per cent of 32GB will be allocated to data partition. This will include preinstalled system apps, system app data, specific system files, and lastly, all user apps and files.

The new requirement doubles the previous minimum flash storage requirement of 16GB set by Google in 2022 for Android 13. If you’re wondering what this means to you is if you have a phone with less than 32GB of storage, you will not be able to upgrade to Android 15. Apart from this, Google’s new requirement applies to new and upgraded devices.

As for RAM, devices with 2GB and 3GB RAM will have to use Android Go Edition, a version designed for ultra-low-end phones. Those with less than 2GB RAM will not be able to run GMS (Google Mobile Services) at all.

Phones with 4GB RAM, on the other hand, will be able to run GMS and have a full Android 15 experience, but will have to resort to Android Go once Google rolls out Android 16. The company states that there will, in effect, be a minimum RAM requirement of 6GB for those users who want to enjoy running full Android.
