Google Pixel phones get Samsung DeX-like PC mode with the latest update

Google is bringing a new Android desktop mode that will allow Pixel phones to behave like a PC when connected to a larger display. The feature has been spotted in recent builds, and it’s a game-changer. While it might sound similar to Samsung DeX, it’s actually a bit different. Here’s everything you need to know.

All you need to know about the desktop mode on Pixels

The feature is coming to new Pixel phones, and once enabled, the device can be connected to a monitor using a USB-C cable or dock. And instead of simply mirroring the phone screen, Android launches a desktop-style environment on the connected monitor.

The biggest change is how apps behave on the external display. Apps open in resizable windows instead of full-screen mobile layouts. You can move them around, snap them side by side, and run multiple apps at the same time.

It feels closer to using an actual computer rather than a stretched phone interface. There is also a desktop-style taskbar that shows pinned apps, recently opened apps and quick access to the app drawer. This makes navigation easier when using a keyboard and mouse.

Another interesting part is that the phone screen remains active while the desktop mode runs on the external display. This means you can use the monitor for work while still using the phone normally in your hand.

The experience is similar to Samsung DeX, though a couple of features seem to be missing. As of now, it’s early to judge the feature, but what’s great is that it works on Pixel devices, which should only boost your productivity.
