Google’s new AI Edge app puts a tiny genius in your pocket that works without the cloud

In a low-key, but significant move, Google has introduced AI Edge Gallery, a new Android app designed to run advanced AI models entirely on-device with no cloud, no connection, and no compromises.

While still in its early experimental stages, the app hints at a future where intelligent tools live right in your pocket, operating privately and instantly.

No fuss about an internet connection

The big shift here is that everything happens locally. From generating images to writing code or getting context-aware answers, the app works fully offline. That means faster response times and better privacy, since data never leaves your device.

At the core of the experience is Gemma 3 1B, a compact language model clocking in at just 529MB. It’s capable of processing up to 2,585 tokens per second, making it one of the fastest models of its size available to mobile users. Despite its small footprint, it handles a wide range of tasks, from smart replies to full document analysis, all without calling the cloud.

To support its AI models, the app pulls from Hugging Face, a trusted name in the open-source AI world, and builds on Google’s AI Edge platform. This includes technologies like TensorFlow Lite and MediaPipe, which help ensure smooth performance even on mid-range or older phones. That said, performance can vary depending on hardware, so users on less powerful devices may want to stick with smaller models.

The app itself is simple by design. Features like AI Chat and Ask Image offer clear entry points to AI-powered tools. A section called Prompt Lab lets users test out short prompts and includes templates to experiment with how the model responds.

AI Edge Gallery is currently in what Google calls an “experimental Alpha release,” and it’s open source under Apache 2.0. That means developers and companies are free to explore, customise, and build on top of it. An iOS version is said to be in the works.

Even as Google faces scrutiny over recent AI partnerships, this release signals a push toward private, personal AI; no Wi-Fi needed.
