The company behind the AI chatbot Grokv, namely xAI founded by Elon Musk, has unveiled Grokipedia, an ambitious new online encyclopaedia that aims to rival the long-standing Wikipedia. Described as an AI-powered knowledge platform, Grokipedia seeks to help humanity “understand the universe” by offering what Musk calls a less ideologically biased resource compared to existing platforms.
What is Grokipedia?
Grokipedia, an AI-powered online encyclopaedia, went live on October 27, marking version 0.1 of the service with nearly 885,000 articles already available. Musk stated that the V1.0 update will be “ten times better” than the current version and asserted that even v0.1 surpasses Wikipedia.
Unlike Wikipedia, Grokipedia does not allow users to edit entries directly. Instead, visitors can suggest edits or flag inaccuracies through a built-in feedback form. Each article includes a timestamp showing when it was last reviewed for transparency.

All the content that appears on Grokipedia is curated and updated by the Grok AI model from xAI. Many articles include disclaimers noting that they have been adapted from Wikipedia under a Creative Commons licence. However, Musk indicated that xAI plans to phase out this dependency by the end of the year, creating original AI-generated content going forward.
He also emphasised that Grokipedia will remain completely open source, allowing anyone to use it freely without paying anything.
Reception, concerns and the road ahead
While Musk’s followers have hailed Grokipedia as a potential disruptor in the knowledge space, critics remain cautious. Leading media outlets like Wired have pointed out potential editorial weaknesses, including limited citation depth, minimal community oversight, and occasional alignment with far-right narratives.

Grokipedia presents itself as a tightly managed yet streamlined platform, but for now, it still relies heavily on Wikipedia as its data foundation. The real challenge lies in maintaining accuracy and neutrality at scale, the same issue its predecessor continues to face.
For now, users can explore Grokipedia’s growing library of articles, but should remember that the platform remains in its early experimental phase.
