How to turn off X’s annoying new Grok auto-translations

X (formerly Twitter) has rolled out a new feature that uses its Grok AI to automatically translate posts in your feed. It’s part of the big generative AI push we’re seeing everywhere. To be fair, these new translations are often much smoother and more accurate than the clunky machine translations of old. But “automatic” is the keyword here.

Sometimes the AI’s helpfulness steps on the joke, and a lot of the original post’s specific nuance or humour gets lost in translation. It’s a classic case of AI being a bit too eager to help.

The steps to turn translations off

So you want to turn it off. Unfortunately, you can’t just go into your main X settings menu to find a single, global “disable all translations” toggle. X enables this behaviour by default, translating any post not in your app’s chosen language.

The only way to manage it is on a per-language basis, one at a time. It’s a bit hidden, but here’s what you do.

1. Scroll your timeline until you find a post that Grok has translated for you.
2. At the top of the tweet, you will see the text “Translated by Grok – Show original”.
3. Look directly to the right of that text for a small settings cog icon. Tap it.

4. An option will pop up, labelled specifically for that post’s original language (for example, “Automatically translate Hindi”).
5. Beside this option, you’ll see a toggle switch. Just flip that switch to the “off” position.

That’s it. You’ve now disabled auto-translate for that one language. You will, however, have to repeat this exact process for every other language you want to read in its original form. It’s not the simplest solution, but it’s the only one we have for now.
