Team Cherry is not finished with Hollow Knight: Silksong. Not even close. The developer has announced Sea of Sorrow, a free expansion for the acclaimed action-adventure, due to arrive sometime in 2026.
The announcement came via a brief blog post and a short teaser trailer that keeps things intentionally minimal. Hornet is shown standing alone on a rocky outcrop as waves crash around her, setting a brooding, ocean-soaked tone.
Beyond confirming that the expansion is nautically themed, Team Cherry is staying quiet, which only adds fuel to the community’s already mounting anticipation.
A familiar pattern, this time by design
There is a certain irony to Silksong getting an expansion, given that the game itself famously began life as DLC for the original Hollow Knight before growing into a full sequel.
This time, however, Sea of Sorrow is firmly positioned as an add-on rather than another pivot. It also continues Team Cherry’s habit of offering substantial post-launch content without charging for it, a rarity in today’s landscape.
The news follows a strong run for Silksong, which launched in 2025 to widespread acclaim. The game earned five nominations at The Game Awards and took home the trophy for Best Action and Adventure Game, reaffirming its place as one of last year’s standout releases.
Switch 2 upgrades come at no extra cost
Alongside the expansion, Team Cherry confirmed it is working on a Nintendo Switch 2 edition of the original Hollow Knight. The updated version aims to bring the game closer to Silksong’s visual standard on new hardware, with improved frame rates, sharper resolution, and other graphical enhancements. Existing Switch owners will receive the upgrade for free.

Both Sea of Sorrow and the Switch 2 update are targeting a broad 2026 release window. For fans, that means more waiting, but also the promise that Hallownest and its worlds beyond are far from finished. Excited for the DLC expansion? Drop a comment with your thoughts?
