Humidifier vs Dehumidifier: What’s best for your home?

The comfortable humidity levels are between 40 to 60 per cent.

Humidifier vs Dehumidifier: What’s best for your home?

Extreme humidity levels during the ongoing summer season are a common occurrence. It refers to the amount of water vapour present in the air. The air quality plays a crucial role in ensuring overall health and comfort. For example, coastal areas like Mumbai can experience high moisture due to their proximity to large water bodies, causing excessive sweating. Meanwhile, inland places have low moisture, resulting in warmer and drier weather.

Inconsistent humidity can cause a range of issues and discomfort. While air conditioners and ceiling fans are the staples in Indian households, they are not intended to solve humidity-related problems. This is where humidifiers and dehumidifiers come in, with both serving opposite purposes. In this article, let’s take a look at both appliances, how they differ, and which one you might need.

Humidifier vs Dehumidifier: What’s the difference?

A humidifier simply adds moisture to the air, which increases the humidity level in the room. It comes in handy where the climate is dry or during the winter season. Low humidity can cause dry skin, sore throat, and also damage wooden furniture.

On the other hand, a dehumidifier eliminates excess moisture in the air, which can lead to discomfort as the temperature feels even hotter. The appliance works by pulling in the humid air, passing it over the cooling coils and then releasing drier, fresher air. High humidity levels are conducive for microbial growth and dust mites.

Humidifier vs dehumidifier: Installation and maintenance

Humidifiers and dehumidifiers are simply plug-and-play appliances. However, whole-house systems may require professional installation, including ductwork adjustments. Both humidity controllers require regular cleaning of the water tank. On the other hand, dehumidifiers also feature a drainage line and filters that can cause operating inefficiency if maintenance is ignored.

Humidifiers are generally affordable, whereas dehumidifiers carry an expensive price tag costing beyond Rs 25,000.

Humidifier vs dehumidifier: Which one is right for you?

Every area you reside in presents its own set of comfort challenges. Hence, the local climate plays a deciding factor while choosing between a humidifier and a dehumidifier. The former is ideal for inland regions with dry weather. Meanwhile, a dehumidifier is a must for coastal or tropical climates. It’s important to consider the size of your room, too, before purchasing.

Both humidifiers and dehumidifiers offer significant health benefits, but they solve different problems. Understanding the environment and your needs will help you make the right choice.
