MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ chipset unveiled with elevated AI capabilities

MediaTek announced the new Dimensity 9300+ chipset today, succeeding the Dimensity 9300 chip. The new Dimensity 9300+ chipset will power flagship smartphones with improved on-device generative AI processing and will have broader support for LLMs, enhancing on-device AI support for smartphones.

The chip’s improved performance and on-device AI capabilties bring it more in line with the rival Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, also a flagship performance-oriented chip with on-device AI capabilities.

MediaTek Dimensity 9300+: What's new?

The MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ is an octa-core chipset with one Cortex-X4 prime core (up to 3.4GHz), three Cortex-X4 performance cores (up to 2.85GHz) and four Cortex-A720-based efficiency cores (clocking up to 2.0GHz). This time around, however, the chipset sports a NeuroPilot Speculative Decode Acceleration Technology that will ensure better generative AI support as compared to previous-generation processors.

With gaming needs in mind, MediaTek 9300+ comes integrated with a 2nd generation hardware raytracing engine and an Arm Immortalis-G720 GPU. This addition ensures fast and smooth raytracing experiences for gamers at 60fps.

Apart from this, the MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ will also enable you to take better low-light pictures owing to its Imagiq 990 ISP unit that offers 18-bit RAW processing. The unit comes built-in with an AI Semantic Analysis Video Engine, which supports advanced AI videography features. These include 16 scene segmentation with real-time video capture to reduce noise, increase brightness, and enhance colour.

MediaTek Dimensity 9300+: AI capabilities

On the artificial intelligence front, MediaTek has equipped the Dimensity 9300+ chipset with on-device LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation) Fusion and NeuroPilot LoRA Fusion 2.0 support. This will effectively help developers bring forth generative AI features for text, images and music to the market. The NeuroPilot LoRA Fusion 2.0, on the other hand, will extend support to LLMs (large language models) such as Google Gemini Nano, Meta Llama 2, Meta Llama 3, Alibaba Cloud Qwen, 01.AI Yi-Nano, Baichuan AI, among others.

The chipset additionally features an improved APU (AI processing unit) with the APU 790 AI engine. According to the brand, it ensures up to 10 per cent better performance compared to its predecessor. While it remains to be seen which devices will ultimately sport the MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ SoC, smartphone maker Vivo has confirmed that its X100s and X100s Pro will be powered by the new chipset. More smartphones with the new chip are expected later this year.
