It has been over fifteen years since Mojang gave us a shiny new toy for Minecraft‘s arsenal. That dry spell officially ends now. The Mounts of Mayhem drop has arrived on Java and Bedrock editions, and it brings even more chaos to the world.
The headline addition is undoubtedly the spear. Mojang clearly didn’t want another generic sword swing. Instead, the spear is designed specifically for movement. It features a tiered damage system that scales based on your velocity. If you are sprinting or riding a horse at full tilt, your charge attack will hit significantly harder.
There’s another perk to the weapon. Since damage is tied to speed, you can strap on a pair of elytra wings and dive-bomb enemies from the sky for massive damage.
Here’s what’s new
New enchantments are included to support this playstyle. The Lunge enchantment gives you a burst of speed when using the spear’s jab attack, which is great for closing the gap on a creeper.
If you prefer the sea over the sky, you are in luck. The update introduces the Nautilus. This is a new aquatic mount that looks like the shell item we have collected for years. It can be tamed using a pufferfish. Riding one is arguably better than a boat since the creature applies the Breath of the Nautilus effect. This means your air supply is preserved indefinitely while mounted.
You will need that speed to escape the new threats. Deserts now host the Camel Husk. These undead beasts do not burn in the sunlight and carry a nasty passenger called the Parched. The Parched is a skeleton variant that is also immune to the sun.

Existing horses haven’t been ignored, either. Netherite horse armour can now be crafted at a smithing table to make your steed fireproof. Furthermore, horses are finally able to swim across water. They move more slowly than they do on land, but at least you won’t have to push them into a boat anymore.
This drop feels distinct because it focuses on movement mechanics rather than just blocks. It’s now out on all platforms, including the Nintendo Switch.
