45 cartridges of pure Kanto nostalgia

Nintendo launches mini Game Boy jukebox packed with Pokémon Red and Blue soundtracks

Nintendo has a knack for selling nostalgia in small, impeccably designed boxes, and its latest release leans fully into that strength. The company has unveiled a miniature Game Boy-style music player dedicated entirely to the soundtracks of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue.

Officially titled the Pokémon Red & Pokémon Blue Game Music Collection: Game Boy Jukebox, the device is exactly what it sounds like. It looks like a classic Game Boy. It plays music from the original Pokémon games. And that is all it does.

There are no games to load, no menus to scroll, and no secret features tucked away behind button combinations. It is a purpose-built jukebox for one of the gaming industry’s most recognisable 8-bit soundtracks.

A Game Boy that only plays Kanto’s greatest hits

The design mirrors Nintendo’s original Game Boy down to the familiar button layout and tiny screen. The screen and controls, however, are purely decorative. They do not function in the way you might hope. Music playback is handled via 45 miniature cartridges, each unlocking a specific track from Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue.

Each cartridge features artwork tied to its corresponding track, turning what could have been a simple playlist into something more tactile. Slide in the Lavender Town theme, swap it out for the Gym Leader battle music, or queue up the Hall of Fame melody.

Nintendo has confirmed that the device does not play video games. It also does not include a headphone jack, meaning the nostalgic tunes will be broadcast out loud. Power comes from three LR44 button cell batteries, which are included in the box.

The full package includes the mini Game Boy jukebox itself, all 45 cartridges, and a dedicated storage case to keep them organised.

The release forms part of Pokémon’s 30th anniversary celebrations, offering fans a way to revisit their journey through the Kanto region without digging out ageing cartridges or emulators.

Nintendo Game Boy Jukebox: Price and availability

The Pokémon Red & Pokémon Blue Game Music Collection Game Boy Jukebox is priced at $69.99 (approx. Rs 6,400) in the US. It is also available in the UK and China.

In North America, Nintendo is selling the device through PokémonCenter.com with a limit of one per customer. UK stock has already sold out. In mainland China, fans can register for a lottery-based purchase starting March 6.

There is currently no word on an India launch, and it does not appear to be scheduled for release there any time soon. Itching to get your hands on one? Drop a comment to let us know.
