OpenAI launches Sora app for AI-generated short videos

More than a year after launching Sora, OpenAI has now launched a dedicated app for the platform. However, this app is like Instagram and YouTube, and lets you watch AI-generated videos.

Additionally, OpenAI also announced the new Sora 2 engine that offers improved results. Here’s all you need to know.

All about the Sora app and Sora 2 engine

The Sora app is an invite-only app on iOS in the US and Canada. However, it’s expected to launch in other regions soon, followed by a release for the Android platform.

While the app is similar to Instagram and YouTube, it’s quite unique in itself, as it lets you make and consume AI-generated videos. The standout feature is cameos. Users can upload a short video of themselves to verify identity, which then allows others to invite their likeness into AI-generated clips.

Cameo owners stay in control and can revoke access anytime. Videos on Sora are capped at 10 seconds, keeping creations quick and engaging. The app also features a Remix option, letting users reimagine existing clips by tweaking characters, scenes, or dialogue. Everything from sound to effects is generated automatically.

Alongside the app, OpenAI also announced the new Sora 2 engine. The upgraded engine ensures better physics, improved consistency, and more accurate interpretations of prompts. It also strengthens safeguards, with liveness checks for cameos to prevent misuse of identities.

To maintain safety, OpenAI has added moderation tools, teen interaction limits, and reputation systems. Public figures cannot be featured unless they voluntarily upload their own cameo.

With this update, Sora isn’t just an experimental tool anymore. It’s a creativity and productivity app that’s all set to take on YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels.
