Rockstar Games is giving Red Dead Redemption another shot at modern life, rolling the 2010 classic and its cult horror spin-off Undead Nightmare onto just about everything that can run a video game. From PS5 and Xbox Series X|S to iOS, Android, Netflix Games and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, it’s one of the widest re-releases the studio has done.
For a game that has spent much of the last decade stuck on ageing hardware or hampered by streaming-only solutions, this is a long-overdue jailbreak.
A second life for a modern classic
The package includes both full single-player campaigns and all of the Game of the Year Edition extras. Set directly after Red Dead Redemption 2, it follows John Marston trying to carve out a quieter life while dealing with the consequences of everything that came before. Undead Nightmare, Rockstar’s delightfully unhinged zombie remix, also returns intact.
One of the more surprising angles here is Netflix. Subscribers will be able to download and play the mobile versions on December 2, marking one of the service’s most substantial gaming additions so far. iOS and Android versions come with mobile-friendly controls, turning Marston’s trek across the frontier into something you can play during your commute to work!
Proper updates for new consoles
Players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S get the technical upgrades the game has sorely needed. There’s 60fps, HDR, sharper image quality and resolutions up to 4K. Switch 2 goes surprisingly hard with support for DLSS, HDR, high-res output and even mouse controls; a rare sight on a handheld-first platform.
If you bought the game on PS4, the original Switch, or own the backwards-compatible version on Xbox One, the new editions will be free to download. Save transfers work across PlayStation and Nintendo hardware, meaning long-time players don’t need to start over. The game will also appear in the GTA+ Games Library and the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog from day one.
