Samsung brings AI to a TV near you

Artificial Intelligence is not the future. With ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini now part of our everyday lives and AI PCs being ubiquitous, AI is the present.

Understandably, it was only a matter of time before AI would also change the way we consume entertainment. At an event in Bengaluru, Samsung offered a peek into what artificial intelligence could do when it’s brought to a TV near you.

What is an AI TV?

An AI-based smart TV is one that leverages artificial intelligence to make your smart TV even smarter. With AI, your TV’s functions such as language and image recognition and natural language processing get a super boost. It also learns your usage behaviour and search habits and adapts to those habits.

Samsung’s 2024 AI TV lineup

Samsung’s next-gen AI TV lineup includes a Neo QLED 8K, Neo QLED 4K, and OLED AI TVs. Of these, the top-of-the-line Neo QLED 8K TV is powered by a NQ8 AI Gen3 processor. According to Samsung, this new Neural Processing Unit (NPU) is twice as fast as its predecessor and is capable of doing a lot more AI tasks.

“Samsung is bringing the transformative power of AI across product categories to improve consumers’ lifestyles. Our 2024 range of Neo QLED 8K, Neo QLED 4K, and OLED TVs redefine the home entertainment experience and offer new innovations across accessibility, sustainability, and enhanced security with the power of AI,” said JB Park, President and CEO, Samsung Southwest Asia.

But what exactly are these AI features on the new TVs, and how exactly will they help enhance viewers’ experience? Well, read on to find out.

What does the AI on Samsung TVs do?

For starters, you will get a far, far better picture and audio quality thanks to the AI feature which brings out the details without making the picture look artificial.

Similarly, AI-based upscaling improves the quality of content being viewed to closely match the 8K display. The AI on Samsung TV also features an AI Motion Enhancer Pro, which is aimed at sports lovers. Whether you’re watching tennis or football, the feature detects the ball’s motion and enhances the overall clarity and sharpness.

Samsung is also leveraging AI to improve the audio experience on its new TVs. Using subtitles have become second nature to us because most of the times, it is difficult to hear the dialogues clearly. Using AI sound technology and what it calls Active Voice Amplifier Pro, Samsung’s AI detects the background sounds in a scene and ambient noise in your room and isolates and enhances the dialogues. This way, Samsung says, users won’t have to increase the volume or strain to hear the dialogues.

A feature aimed at gamers, called AI Auto Game Mode, recognises the game being played and its genre, and accordingly tweak the picture and sound quality settings. So, whether you’re playing a fast-paced racing game or a shooter like BGMI, you won’t have to tweak the settings every time to suit your gaming style.

Lastly, AI Energy Mode saves power without compromising picture quality. The TV auto-detects your surroundings and what you’re watching, and then automatically adjusts the brightness levels. Doing this, it is claimed, also helps in cut down overall energy consumption.
