Samsung’s latest gen foldables are now out. And while all eyes will no doubt be on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, let’s not forget about the more affordable (and less serious!) Galaxy Z Flip 7.

Unlike the drastically slimmer Fold 7 – a borderline engineering marvel – the Flip 7 doesn’t seem all that different. At least at first glance. But spend a bit of time with it and you will see the differences. Having done just that, here are our Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 first impressions.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: What’s new?

It may not be a weight loss on the scale of the Fold 7, but the new flip phone is thinner and lighter than before. Now, the phone measures 13.7mm folded, and weighs a bit under 200 grams, making it the lightest Flip phone yet. And this doesn’t come at the cost of durability.

Samsung has made the Armour Flex hinge up to 30 per cent thinner, and stronger. The frame too feels stronger thanks to Armour Aluminium, and body is now protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Adding to the survivability capabilities is the IP48 rating.

Among the biggest changes is the outer screen (called Flex Window), which is now almost edge-to-edge. At 4.1-inches, it is not only bigger, but with 2,600 nits of peak brightness and 120Hz refresh rate, the outer screen is so much more practical. There’s so much you can do now without having to flip open the phone.

Going bigger is also happening under the hood with a 4,300mAh battery – the biggest one yet on a Flip. It’s quite the step up from last year’s 3,700mAh cell. By Samsung’s claims, this battery is good enough to offer up to 31 hours of video playback.

Cameras too get a boost thanks to the pair of 50MP wide and 12MP ultra-wide sensors. While on paper they don’t feel like a gimmick any more, we will wait till we have really tested the cameras before passing a judgement.

Just like the other Samsung phones, AI will again play a big role in the overall Flip 7’s user experience. Gemini Live integration right on the cover screen feels seamless and works as advertised.

While the Fold 7 is getting more serious and mature, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 continues to hold on to its playful nature. From its bright colours and better cameras to the more refined built, the Flip has come a long way.
