Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform at MWC 2026, marking a major shift in how wearable devices are expected to function in the AI era. The new chip is designed to power smartwatches, AI pins, smart glasses and other compact devices with stronger on-device intelligence.
With this launch, Qualcomm is positioning wearables as independent computing devices rather than simple smartphone companions.
Snapdragon Wear Elite: On-device AI moves to the forefront
The Snapdragon Wear Elite integrates a dedicated Hexagon neural processing unit that can run billion-parameter AI models directly on the device. This enables features such as real-time transcription, contextual recommendations and life logging without constantly relying on cloud servers.
A separate low-power AI engine manages always-on tasks like keyword detection and activity tracking, improving overall efficiency compared to the previous generation. Built on a 3nm process, the platform introduces a big.LITTLE architecture for wearables for the first time.
The chip includes a high-performance 2.1GHz core alongside additional cores for balanced workloads. Qualcomm claims up to five times better single-core CPU performance and seven times faster graphics rendering, enabling smoother animations and quicker app launches.
Battery life is also expected to improve by up to 30 percent, with support for charging up to 50 percent in around 10 minutes.
Advanced connectivity and ecosystem push
The Snapdragon Wear Elite supports 5G RedCap, Micro-Power Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 6.0, ultra-wideband, GNSS and NB-NTN for satellite-based messaging when cellular networks are unavailable. This broad stack allows wearables to stay connected across different scenarios, including emergency situations.
Google, Samsung, and Motorola have confirmed support for the platform. The upcoming generation of Galaxy Watch and other Wear OS devices are expected to adopt this chip in the coming months. If real-world performance matches the claims, Snapdragon Wear Elite could significantly narrow the gap between smartphones and wearables.
